Ophelia #1-4 at Shape Gallery, Westfield Stratford

Ophelia #1-4 are now exhibiting at the Shape Gallery in Westfield Stratford City.

The exhibition is on until 18th October 2014, with work for sale by 20 artists – including etchings, photography, ceramics and paintings.

The gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, at:

Ophelia #1-6 is a limited edition run of 30 sets of hand made original prints, signed recto and mounted on conservation grade board. Print size 12cm x 9cm, mount size 30cm x 42cm.

Although only images 1-4 of Edition 7 are in the exhibition, you can request to purchase the full set of 6.

Ophelia #4

About Ophelia #1-6:

Ophelia #1-6 is an exploration of the story of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, made in response to studying previous artistic interpretations of the text. Combining underwater digital photography with alternative printing, this series studies the destruction and turmoil that lies beneath the romanticism and serenity suggested in traditional representations of her fate, both in image and process.

After creating these underwater photographs I repeatedly printed and re-photographed them using lo-fi techniques to intensify and degrade them. In the final stage I used the now discontinued Polaroid 669 film to make water-based emulsion lifts onto textured watercolour paper; the destructive yet delicate nature of the process continuing the themes of the subject matter.

Although I didn’t make it to the top 50, there were thousands of entries from 94 countries so I’m really happy to have had my work showcased in this album and on their facebook page as part of the competition. Congratulations to the winners!

…late additions (Alma Street Fair today!)

Today!! Sunday 27th July, from 12-7pm at Alma Street and Inkerman Road, NW5, London

As well as 5 complete sets (and a handful of single images) of the Ophelia series, I’ve some teeny tiny prints of other photographic works – some new, some not so new, and a couple of my old favourites too.

Perfect for small budgets, prints include a selection of interesting trees and plants, a striking section of rock (which reminds me of the Boyle family), and an impressive bird – a new image from the series Heralds (faded glory).

For one day only… Sunday 27th July, NW5

On Sunday 27th July I’ll be at this year’s Alma Street Fair, selling original limited edition prints from my series Ophelia #1-6.

This annual festival across Alma Street and Inkerman Road, NW5 celebrates the diverse talents of Kentish Town, London.

The fair is on Sunday 27th July, from 12-7pm at Alma Street and Inkerman Road, NW5, London

There are two stages, and lots of lovely food and goodies for sale on Alma Street. Inkerman Road is also transformed into an outdoor art gallery filled with exhibitions, print sales and art workshops. This is where you’ll find me and my Ophelia prints – with complete sets and individual prints for sale. I might also be showing some new work too – more on that later.

This is my first year at the festival so I’m very excited to be taking part! Fingers crossed for good weather!

New exhibition opens today!

Ophelia #1-6 will be showing from today until 2nd June 2014 at VAI, 200 Pentonville Road, N1 9JP

I’m exhibiting alongside artists Kevin Hope and Cinzia Castellano.

Ophelia #1-6 is an exploration of the story of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, made in response to previous artistic interpretations.

Original Polaroid emulsion lifts of underwater photographs subjected to a series of processes that simultaneously intensify and degrade the image. The destructive yet delicate nature of the water-based emulsion lift continues the themes of the subject matter and ensures that each print is completely unique in its tones and arrangement.

Limited edition run of 30 sets of original prints onto acid free water-colour paper, handmade by the artist from this now discontinued Polaroid film. Each unframed print is numbered and signed recto, and mounted under conservation grade board.

Women’s Work is touring!

Following its recent success at Resource for London, Women’s Work moves next to St Luke’s Community Centre. Curated by Shiri Shalmy, this exhibition of emerging and established Islington artists explores the cultural, social, political and domestic lives of women.

Opening event: Thursday 14 November 6.30- 8.30pm (refreshments available)

These are original Polaroid Emulsion Lifts onto acid free water colour paper. The very nature of the process continues the theme of the subject matter, and ensures that each print is completely unique in its tones and arrangement.

Signed recto, mounted on conservation grade board. Each print is unique and handmade by me. Image size – approximately 12cm x 9cm, mount size A3. Total edition run of 30 sets.

Great review of Women’s Work exhibition

Ellen Davis-Walker’s review looks at the great range of work in this show curated by Shiri Shalmy with Rowan Arts, and considers the juxtaposition of mine and Mum Ghose’s piece:

“In Bag for a new Mum Ghose manages to capture a similar sense of isolation. Her torn up shredded handbag hangs suspended from a pillar, with keys, chain and dummy spilling from its torn centre. The sense of disjuncture between the outward image of ‘containment’ and security evoked by the presence of the handbag and the inner turmoil it conceals provides an interesting echo with Nicola Jayne Maskrey’s Ophelia Series. Using an over-exposed photograph of an anonymous female, Maskrey seeks to explore the edges of sanity and emotional turmoil. Although on the one hand still and peaceful, Ghose and Maskrey nonetheless succeed in bringing an unmistakable air of violence to their work which see conventional notions of the feminine being ruthlessly unravelled.”
