Obsolete and Discontinued – in the BJP, a book launch and an exhibition!

Obsolete and Discontinued is being made into a book!

The book is edited by project founder Mike Crawford and designed by Paul McKenzie Studio with an  introductory essay by Brigitte Lardinois. Published by Brovira Press the book is a limited edition run of 750 copies, cloth bound hardback, 128 pp, size: 28x24cm.

To support the project please do contribute to the O&D Crowdfunding campaign – as well as discounted copies you can buy limited edition postcards and prints from a selection of the featured artists.

The book launch is on Friday October 5th at Waterstones Bookshop Gallery, Gower Street, W1 – which will also mark the opening of a month long exhibition of all of the prints. Please do come along and check out the work in person, the prints are extra beautiful and some are wonderfully experimental.

This is my print for the project –

And if that wasn’t enough excitement, the BJP featured Obsolete and Discontinued on their website as well as running an article in its February 2018 magazine!

Ophelia #3

Ophelia #3

Combining underwater digital photography with alternative printing methods, this series studies the destruction and turmoil that lies beneath the romanticism and serenity suggested in traditional artistic representations of the story of Ophelia, both in image and process.

After creating these underwater photographs I repeatedly printed and re-photographed them using lo-fi techniques to simultaneously intensify and degrade the images. In the final stage I used out-of-date Polaroid film to make water-based emulsion lifts onto textured watercolour paper; the destructive yet delicate nature of the process continuing the themes of the subject matter.

Ophelia #2 – polaroid emulsion lift

Each emulsion lift is handmade by me and completely unique. The mounted, unframed  original prints are on sale at £44 each.  If you don’t mind mixing and matching edition numbers you can collect the full set of 6 in the sale.

Established in 1991, and hosting a wonderfully eclectic collection of beautiful work, Cupola remains one of the most respected contemporary galleries for the sale and exhibition of fine art & fine craft in the north of England.

Ophelia #1-6

Ophelia #1-6 is an exploration of the story of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, made in response to studying previous artistic interpretations of the text such as Waterhouse and Millais.  Combining underwater digital photography with alternative printing methods, this series studies the destruction and turmoil that lies beneath the romanticism and serenity suggested in traditional representations of her fate, both in image and process.

This is a limited edition run of 30 sets of hand made original prints, signed recto and mounted on conservation grade board. Print size 12cm x 9cm, mount size 30cm x 42cm.

After creating these underwater photographs I repeatedly printed and re-photographed them using lo-fi techniques to simultaneously intensify and degrade the images. In the final stage I used the now discontinued Polaroid 669 film to make water-based emulsion lifts onto textured watercolour paper; the destructive yet delicate nature of the process continuing the themes of the subject matter.

I’ve just made a few more editions of Ophelia #1-6, if you would like to buy single images or a set, please get in touch!

Ophelia #1 (from Ophelia 1-6, Edition 4) – Polaroid Emulsion Lifts

Original Polaroid Emulsion Lift onto acid free water colour paper.  Signed recto, mounted on conservation grade board.  Each print is unique and handmade by me.  1 in a set of 6 images, from a limited edition run of 30 sets.

Image size – approximately 12cm x 9cm, mount size A3.

Prints are available as single images or sets.  For more information please contact me.

Shot underwater, the photographs are made into Polaroid 669 prints and soaked in a hot water bath to lift the emulsion containing the image from the paper beneath. The emulsion is then floated onto water colour paper and arranged into position. The very nature of the process continues the theme of the subject matter, and ensures that each original handmade print is completely unique in its tones and arrangement.
