Flower Flower Water Light is a travel diary of chaotic beauty and colourful abstraction, documenting a journey through the landscapes of the UK, France, and Spain.

I began this series in a direct attempt to escape from what felt like a particularly angry and fearful time in the UK in the dual contexts of Brexit and austerity. I’d really had enough and just wanted to visually and emotionally lose myself in my connection to the land. Coincidentally though, I reached the Catalonian landscape at the height of its own independence referendum, reminiscent of what I was trying to leave behind.

Avoiding deliberate regional classification I allowed the images to form chronologically throughout my journey, thereby unifying the three countries into one emotional state.  I used triple exposures on 35mm slide film to randomly blend and overlay flowers, plants, and the land with the ripples of sunlight on the surface of the sea, recording my experiences in a series of ethereal images that emulate memory and movement through time and place.

I was liberated by this loss of control in giving myself over to the process and its chance elements. The individual components of the image spill out of the graphic misalignment of the frames, extending beyond the confines of the lens. The light on the water simoutlaneously  distills and obscures my memories. And water, in its component elements, its different states and as a whole, universally connects us to everything.
