Flower Flower Water Light is a travel diary of chaotic beauty and colourful abstraction, documenting a 3 week road trip through the landscapes of the UK, France, and Spain. Triple exposures on 35mm slide film blend and overlay flowers, plants, the land, and ripples of sunlight on the surface of the sea, thereby recording my journey in a series of ethereal images that emulate memory and movement through time and place

of the land & us is an online photography magazine focusing on the land and the people who live on it, publishing the new, the old and the up-and-coming in landscape and portrait photography.

Ophelia #3

Ophelia #3

Combining underwater digital photography with alternative printing methods, this series studies the destruction and turmoil that lies beneath the romanticism and serenity suggested in traditional artistic representations of the story of Ophelia, both in image and process.

After creating these underwater photographs I repeatedly printed and re-photographed them using lo-fi techniques to simultaneously intensify and degrade the images. In the final stage I used out-of-date Polaroid film to make water-based emulsion lifts onto textured watercolour paper; the destructive yet delicate nature of the process continuing the themes of the subject matter.

Ophelia #2

Ophelia #2 – polaroid emulsion lift

Each emulsion lift is handmade by me and completely unique. The mounted, unframed  original prints are on sale at £44 each.  If you don’t mind mixing and matching edition numbers you can collect the full set of 6 in the sale.

Established in 1991, and hosting a wonderfully eclectic collection of beautiful work, Cupola remains one of the most respected contemporary galleries for the sale and exhibition of fine art & fine craft in the north of England.

Cornish roads (hedges), in Flow at Fix Photo Festival

This image from my series Cornish roads (hedges), in Flow has been awarded Expert Choices 3rd place in the Harmony category for the FIX Photo Festival Open exhibition!

NJMaskrey01

Cornish Roads (hedges) – in Flow, B3306

Hosted by Photocrowd, the judges for the FIX Photo Festival Expert Choice Awards are Laura Noble – curator and director of LA Noble Gallery, Magnum Photographer Chris Steele-Perkins, photographer/writer/filmmaker Lottie Davies, and Ben Brain – editor of Digital Camera Magazine. Of my photograph, the judges said:

“We loved the fractured light which felt harmonious from the lyrical visuals, we all thought of music when we saw this. The palette works really well and gives it an expressionistic tone. A really great stylistic use of the photographic form.”

The Experts also Commended another of my photographs from this series. You can see both of my photographs and all of the other winning photographs on Photocrowd.

Thank you to the judges for selecting my work and for their lovely feedback! I’m really excited to be part of the festival. Here are the details:

Exhibition dates: 12th – 21st May 2017 (free entry)

Venue: Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, London SE1 9PH

Opening hours: Monday – Sunday 11:00 – 20:30, except Monday 15th when the gallery closes at 18:00.

Cornish roads (hedges), in Flow is an abstract study of time, colour, movement, and the Flow state; shot on an iPhone5s around the southern tip of Cornwall. To see more from this series, or to find out more about my work please take a look at my website.

London Project / Traces on The Curated Fridge!

One of my favourite images from London Project / Traces has been selected for the December 2016/January 2017 exhibition by The Curated Fridge.

NicolaJayne_Maskrey_02

Untitled – London Project / Traces

The Curated Fridge is the brainchild of Yorgos Efthymiadis, a unique project with the aim of celebrating fine art photography and connecting photographers from around the world.

This exhibition was guest curated by Elin Spring – founder, editor and head writer of the photography blog “What Will You Remember?”, featuring exhibit reviews, curator and artist interviews, book reviews and commentary.

Here’s a photograph of The Curated Fridge in its entirety – my photograph is on the bottom door. You can see all of the photographer’s work on their websitefacebook page, and on their instagram feed.

Here’s also a link to their lovely video of afternoon shadows  coincidentally framing my image of afternoon shadows on the bottom door:  https://www.facebook.com/pg/thecuratedfridge/videos/

My photograph is from a sketch-series of images exploring the light, shadows, and layers of reflections that appear momentarily in my everyday environment, documenting the juxtaposition of plants and trees – cultivated and wild – with built structures.

To find out more about The Curated Fridge take a look at this interesting article on Lenscratch.

Thank you Yorgos and Elin for including my work in this show!

Obsolete and Discontinued in Cologne

The Obsolete and Discontinued project that I am participating in is exhibiting in Cologne, Germany this winter.

Led by the amazing London based photographer, printer, and alternative processes expert Mike Crawford the project celebrates the unique features and potential of analogue photography, using out of date and discontinued photographic papers, some of which were 20-30 years old.

The project features work by about 50 photographic artists all over the world, including members of the London Alternative Photography Collective.  This is my image, a contact print from an iphone5s photograph.
